The Pittsburgh Steelers depth chart was released for the first time under new coach Mike McCarthy yesterday. While most of this roster is pretty much set in stone, there were a few nuggets worth discussing. Here are the five initial takeaways from yesterday’s depth chart release;
1. Keeanu Benton not listed as a nose!:
Finally, a coaching staff with some common sense! We have been begging the Steelers to move Benton of the nose since his first training camp. It was obvious to everyone accept Mike Tomlin apparently that his best position was as a 3-4 end. Benton is not a run stuffing 3-4 nose tackle, and the results showed that. The Steelers would be wise to get a contract extension done before the season starts. Keeanu Benton is primed for a big 2026 with this move.
2. Jaylen Warren RB1:
There’s been a lot of noise that Rico Dowdle will be the Steelers starting running back ever since the Steelers signed him. Well the Steelers don’t see it that way just yet. There is no question Warren is the more talented back. The theory is Warren can not hold up physically as a number one back. At the end of the day, this will probably end up a near 50/50 split between the two backs.
3. Roman Wilson WR3?:
Many of us thought it was a forgone conclusion that rookie Germie Bernard was the Steelers WR3. Reports out of training camp that Roman Wilson is having an outstanding camp are apparently true. If Roman Wilson can be a productive member of this offense, that would be a huge boost to a very thin wide receiver group.
4. The right side of the line:
This one doesn’t come as much of a surprise, but it is something we will be keeping an eye on al camp. Dylan Cook and Spencer Anderson were always the leaders in the clubhouse as the starters on the right side of the line. Keep an eye on rookie Max Iheanachor. Reports out of camp say he is really coming on since the pads came on. This Steelers depth chart could look much different come September.
5. Gabriel Rubio??:
Gabriel Rubio is shocking listed ahead of veterans like Logan Lee, and Esezi Otemewo. This is quite a surprise considering Rubio was a bit of an afterthought going into the draft. Almost every draft site had Rubio as an undrafted free agent at best. The Steelers see something in this player the rest f the NFL does not. Time will tell if they are right on their sixth round pick.
