The Pittsburgh Steelers have been significant players in free agency this year.  This is very unusual for this franchise over their history.  With only approximately $13 million left to spend, we can expect only a few more minor signings at most.  https://overthecap.com/salary-cap/

With that in mind, here are five low cost free agents that the Steelers could still add to help the team:

1.  Ronnie Harrison – Safety:

The Tyrann Matthieu watch continues in Pittsburgh fueled by a recent report that Mike’s Tomlin contacted the Chiefs free agent safety.  The longer this goes on however, the less likely it seems.  The same goes for former Steeler Terrell Edmunds.  We can’t help but think there are some hurt feelings after the team did not pick up his fifth year option.  After those two, the free agent safety class gets pretty thin.  One name to keep an eye on is Ronnie Harrison previously of the Cleveland Browns.  Harrison’s strength is as a run stuffing safety, which would make him an excellent compliment to Minkah Fitzpatrick.  Pittsburgh has stressed signing younger free agents so at only 24 years old, Harrison fits the bill.

2.  Albert Wilson – Wide Receiver:

The other major need still left to fill on this roster is wide receiver.  Slot receiver in particular is one of the only positions still open on this team.  Wilson possesses above average speed (4.43/40), and has been a productive third receiver in both Kansas City and most recently Miami.  He has a very respectable career yards per catch of 11.5.  Wilson would be welcomed veteran addition to the wide receiver room in Pittsburgh.

3. Dante Pettis – Wide Receiver:

This one may be a bit of a long shot given Dante Pettis’ injury history.  He is slight of frame, but he does have the kind of blazing speed this offense needs.  If the Steelers are in the mood to roll the dice on a potential home run hitting receiver, Pettis is the guy.  This is a player who ran a 4.3/40 yard dash coming out of the University of Washington.  The former second round pick has yet to make a mark in the NFL, but the upside is intriguing.

4.  Giovanni Bernard – Running Back:

Giovani Bernard has been the ultimate number two back over his career with Cincinnati.  Excellent catching balls out of the backfield, while still being a threat in the run game.  This is the definition of what the Steelers need to take some of the load off of Najee Harris.  While we still prefer Jerick MicKinnon for this role, Bernard seems more likely to come in at a team friendly deal.  Five under the radar free agent targets for the Steelers

5.  Kenny Young – Inside Linebacker:

Kenny Young is coming off a career year in 2021.  He had 75 tackles and two sacks between the Rams and Broncos last season.  Young tested as an above average athlete for the inside linebacker position coming out of UCLA in 2018.   He is still only 26 making him a prime target for what the Steelers like in defensive free agents.  Pittsburgh already signed Myles Jack, but the depth behind he and Devin Bush is poor.  Young would make an excellent depth addition along with providing special teams help as well.
