And so the soap opera that is the 2017 Steelers off-season continues. The Justin Gilbert experiment lasted all of one season now that Pittsburgh has released the former 8th overall pick. What exactly transpired over the course of the season where he never really got on the field and ultimately got released is a mystery. Was Gilbert a problem in the locker room, or was he just not good enough to win a spot on the roster next season? With all that’s happened lately around this organization, maybe the Steelers decided to have one less trouble maker around the team. Releasing Gilbert apparently cost them nothing under the salary cap, and only a sixth round pick overall. It’s not the worst gamble considering the potential upside of a former top 10 pick.
