The Pittsburgh Steelers OTAs began on Tuesday.  This represents the official start of the off-season process for the team.  It is also our first look at the rookies, and newly acquired players all together in a team setting. During OTAs, and on into training camp some unexpected players can start to make some noise on making the final 53 man roster.  Here are five players we think could shine during this process, and eventually make the team come September:

1.  Daijuan Edwards RB:

The Steelers have had some luck recently in the undrafted running back area.  Jaylen Warren came out of nowhere to now being thought of as possibly this team’s best back.  Daijuan Edwards may not reach the heights Warren has, but this is a talented back who will push for the number three role on this team.  He had over a thousand total yards, and 13 touchdowns in his final year at Georgia.  https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/players/daijun-edwards-1.html

2. Beanie Bishop CB:

We are all well aware of the lack of depth at the slot corner position on this team.  This presents a golden opportunity for an undrafted player like Beanie Bishop to grab a roster spot, or maybe even a starting role.  Bishop led the West Virginia Mountaineers in interceptions (4), and was third in overall tackles (67) in 2023.  Size is a concern here with him being only 5’9” –  180lbs, but speed is not having run a 4.39 forty at his pro day.  Bishop is a willing tackler however, and has a real shot to make this roster.

3. Marquez Callaway WR:

The Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver spots are wide open after George Pickens, and Roman Wilson.  One name not getting much buzz yet is former Saints wideout Marquez Callaway.  Callaway had 700 yards, and 6 touchdowns for the Saints in 2021.  Don’t be surprised if Callaway earns a spot in this wide open competition for depth at the wide receiver position.

4. Luq Barcoo CB:

Luq Barcoo is entering his second trip though Steelers OTAs.  The team clearly sees something in him, having kept him around on the practice squad all last season, and now brining him back in 2024.  Barcoo had 9 interceptions, and another 7 pass breakups in his final season at San Diego St. in 2019.  Pittsburgh has very little depth at corner right now, opening up a solid chance for Barcoo to make the roster.

5. Jeremiah Moon OLB:

Jeremiah Moon is an interesting player to keep an eye on this offseason.  Pittsburgh snatched him up on waivers in January while the Ravens were trying to stash him on their practice squad.  Moon was an undrafted free agent from Florida when he signed with Baltimore in 2022.  He had his best game as a pro vs the Steelers last season where he had 3 tackles and a forced fumble in limited action.  This is an exceptional, but raw athlete who could really make some noise this offseason.  We had Moon making the roster in our first roster prediction here: Steelers 53 man roster prediction 1.0: The way too early version
