The Pittsburgh Steelers aren’t exactly in the kind of cap shape we were led to believe they were heading into this off-season. The team is currently slightly under the projected $225 million salary cap ceiling as we speak. Here are some under the radar Steelers free agent targets that won’t break the bank to keep an eye on:
1. Germaine Pratt – LB:
While we’d all love to have a name like Tremaine Edmunds in free agency, the reality is he will almost certainly price himself way out of the Steelers budget. A nice consolation prize however would be Germaine Pratt. Pratt scored a 90.1 coverage score from PFF, while finishing second on the team in tackles with 99. A versatile, do it all linebacker is just what the doctor ordered for this team, no to mention weakening a division rival at the same time. He would be an excellent replacement for the outgoing Devon Bush. Devin Bush: Steelers biggest draft bust?
2. Ben Powers – G:
Tired of the Kevin Dotson shenanigans, and inconsistent play? So are we! Enter Ben Powers a 6’4”, 340lb guard who’s only 26 years old. Powers would be an upgrade for an already much improved line heading into 2023.
3. Paris Campbell – WR:
One thing missing from the Steelers wide receiver group is top end speed. Paris Campbell is coming off a career year with 63 catches for 623 yards and 3 touchdowns. That, on a train wreck of an offense in Indianapolis. Campbell’s 4.3 speed would be a welcomed addition to this wide receiver room.
4. Taven Bryan – DT:
Taven Bryan checks all the boxes for what this team looks for in it’s defensive lineman. He’s tall (6’5”), big (310lbs), and has the first round pedigree this team covets. With Pittsburgh set to lose several lineman this off-season, Bryan would be an excellent depth piece with some upside.
5. Greedy Williams – CB:
When it comes to Steelers free agent targets, not many fit the mold like Greedy Williams. Williams has never quite lived up to his billing as a second round pick. He is however the ultimate height/weight/speed athlete this team loves. This is a corner who stand 6’2”, has long arms, and ran a 4.3/40 coming out of LSU. Oh, and he should be fairly cheap as well. All the things the Steelers love rolled up into one neat package. https://ras.football/ras-information/
Pairing Pratt with drafting Trenton Simpson in the draft would be HUGE for this defense. I also like all of your other suggestions . If the salary cap would allow taking all 5 the Steelers would enter the season as a true contender.
Thanks Rodney. Appreciate the comments. Looking forward to any feedback you have on future posts
